Faraz Jaka

Faraz Jaka was born on September 9, 1985, in San Jose, California, to a Pakistani immigrant family. He attended Piedmont Hills High School, where he excelled in athletics, breaking 2:00 in the half-mile and 4:30 in the mile as a track runner, and also played basketball. In addition to sports, he wrote poetry and was an avid hip-hop fan, developing a competitive spirit that later aided his poker career. He went on to study Economics and Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.

Jaka began playing poker during his freshman year at UIUC, starting with online games and small live home games. His early tendency to play any two suited cards — hoping to flop a flush — earned him the nickname "The Toilet," which he adopted as his online alias and has kept ever since. He found rapid success in high-stakes online cash games, building his bankroll to over $170,000 by his sophomore year. However, he eventually lost it all by playing beyond his means. "It was bound to happen," Jaka later reflected. "It made me a lot stronger." He then switched focus to low buy-in tournaments and sit-and-goes, studying tournament strategy intensively — a decision he credits as essential to his later success.

Jaka has 13 cashes on the World Poker Tour (WPT) with five final tables. His breakout season was WPT Season VIII (2009–2010), when he was named WPT Player of the Year. Highlights include runner-up in the WPT Bellagio Cup V ($774,780), finishing behind Alexandre Gomes and ahead of Justin Smith, Alec Torelli, and Erik Seidel; third place in the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic ($571,374) behind Daniel Alaei and Josh Arieh; and second place in the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown ($454,496) in 2018. In 2024, he won the WPT Rock 'N' Roll Poker Open $10,000 Deep Stack for $313,495 after a lengthy heads-up battle against Phillip Krnyaich. Other notable results include a fifth-place finish in the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star ($216,320), sixth in WPT Jacksonville ($38,241), seventh in WPT Brasil ($33,253), and a win in WPTDeepStacks Black Hawk ($77,290). His total WPT earnings exceed $2.4 million.

Jaka's first WSOP cash came in 2007 with a 22nd-place finish in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em event for over $14,000. He made his first WSOP final table in 2009, finishing third in the $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed event for $400,525. In 2010, he placed eighth in the $10,000 Heads-Up Championship for approximately $113,000. At the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe in Cannes, he finished fourth in the €10,000 Mixed Max event for €86,087. Long considered one of the "Best Without a Bracelet," Jaka finally broke through in 2023 by winning his first WSOP bracelet in the $1,500 Shootout No-Limit Hold'em event, taking home $237,637. He has amassed nine WSOP final tables and 65 money finishes, with his highest Main Event finish being 219th in 2023. His total lifetime live tournament earnings exceed $8.5 million.

Jaka is known for a hyper-aggressive, loose-aggressive (LAG) style that puts constant pressure on opponents. His early online play was characterized by frequent raises and re-raises, often playing many hands and forcing tough decisions. In live tournaments, he adapts his aggression based on opponent tendencies, displaying keen psychological insight and the ability to execute big bluffs. He is widely regarded by peers as one of the top players in the game.

In 2021, Jaka founded JAKA Coaching, a poker training site that has gained significant traction, with many students achieving deep runs in major tournaments worldwide. Previously, he was involved in creating Checkraise, a poker site targeting the Brazilian market that operated from 2017 to 2019. He considers himself an entrepreneur and businessman as much as a poker player, often investing his winnings in real estate and other ventures. He holds a degree in Economics and Business from UIUC.
