Harry Demetriou

Charidimos (Harry) Demetriou was born on 20 August 1958 in London, England, to a Greek Cypriot family. He adopted the nickname "The Wise Owl" early in his poker career, reflecting his thoughtful and calculating approach to the game. Demetriou first gained attention in the poker world through his success in cash games and live tournaments, eventually becoming a fixture on the international circuit.

Demetriou made his mark at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) with a third-place finish in the $2,000 no-limit Texas hold'em event in 2002, earning $80,200. The tournament was won by Layne Flack, but Demetriou's performance established him as a force in the series. In 2004, he finished 18th in the WSOP Main Event, taking home $147,500. During that tournament, he reportedly became annoyed with the belligerent attitude of Josh Arieh, a moment that highlighted his no-nonsense demeanor.

The £5,000 no-limit hold'em grand final attracted 100 entries, and Demetriou took first prize of £250,000 (approximately $462,826), defeating Ram Vaswani heads-up. As of 2013, his total live tournament winnings exceeded $2,100,000, with $593,544 from ten WSOP cashes.
