Jonathan Tamayo

Jonathan Tamayo was born in 1986 and grew up in Humble, Texas, where he attended Humble High School. He later studied hotel management at Cornell University in New York before committing to a poker career. Tamayo developed a love for poker in his early years, honing his skills in local card rooms and online. Before turning professional, he balanced his time between playing cards and refereeing high school football in Texas—a role he continues to hold even after achieving poker success.

Tamayo's first WSOP cash came in 2007 in a $3,000 Limit Hold'em event. In 2008, he finished second in the $1,500 Mixed Limit/No-Limit Hold'em event for $140,000. His first major breakthrough occurred in 2009 when he finished 21st in the WSOP Main Event for $352,832, sharing a table with eventual champion Joe Cada. This deep run earned him recognition and a solid foundation for his career. Tamayo is also a four-time WSOP Circuit ring winner, with his most recent ring coming in 2018. Prior to his 2024 Main Event victory, he had more than $2 million in live career earnings and 63 WSOP cashes.

Beyond the WSOP, Tamayo has recorded consistent results in other tournaments. In May 2021, he won a $1,100 NLHE event for $237,935. In February 2013, he won a $1,675 WSOP Circuit event in Palm Beach for $206,020. He also placed third in a $3,300 NLHE event in April 2024 for $180,000. Tamayo has four cashes on the World Poker Tour and has built a reputation for deep runs in large-field events. His total live tournament earnings exceed $12.4 million as of 2025, ranking him among the top earners in poker history.

The 2024 WSOP Main Event drew a record field of 10,112 players. Tamayo entered the final table in seventh chip position. On the 235th hand of the heads-up match against Jordan Griff, Tamayo's 8♦ 3♠ beat Griff's 9♥ 6♣ on a board of 9♦ 8♣ 3♦ A♣ 5♦ to clinch the world championship and the $10,000,000 first prize. This victory marked his first WSOP bracelet and catapulted him to the top of the poker world. Tamayo is roommates with 2015 Main Event champion Joe McKeehen, who was a key supporter during the final table.

During the 2024 WSOP Main Event final table, Tamayo's rail was observed using real-time solvers to analyze hands, leading to accusations of gaining an unfair advantage. While Tamayo did not violate any existing rules at the time, the situation sparked debate over the ethics of external assistance in poker tournaments. As a result, the WSOP introduced Rule 63b, banning the use of electronic aids by players or spectators in the tournament area. Reflecting on the controversy, Tamayo stated: “I’m fine with any changes, basically. It’s clear now what you can and can’t do. And it’s the same for everybody.”

Tamayo is known for a patient, fundamentally sound style. He avoids unnecessary risks early in tournaments, focusing on accumulating chips gradually. In the later stages, he exploits opponents' weaknesses by applying pressure based on hand range analysis and board texture. He excels at post-flop play, using position to dictate the pace of hands. This controlled aggression makes him a threat in deep-stacked scenarios. His discipline and ability to perform under pressure have been key to his success, particularly in the Main Event.

Tamayo maintains a low-profile presence in the poker community, rarely seeking publicity. He is respected among peers for his dedication to the game. After winning the $10 million Main Event, his first purchases were a 10-pound box of lemon-flavored Jelly Bellies and a $4,000 set of golf clubs. He has not made any extravagant purchases like luxury cars or homes, continuing to drive his 2019 Honda. Tamayo is also an avid daily fantasy sports player; in 2019, he won the Fantasy Hockey Championship on DraftKings. He continues to live modestly, referee high school football, and compete in poker tournaments. As of 2026, he has 122 WSOP cashes and 14 final tables, with total earnings of $12,197,417 according to WSOP.com.
