Jose Ignacio Barbero

Jose Ignacio Barbero, known to the poker world as "Nacho," was born on February 15, 1982, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He spent much of his childhood in the outskirts of the small town of Campana, where he developed an early interest in maps and strategy games. His first competitive passion was Magic: The Gathering, a game in which he excelled so much that he represented the Argentine national team and even won the national championship. One of his friends, Gabriel Nassif, introduced him to online poker by giving him access to his $850 PartyPoker account. Nacho lost the entire amount in one night while trying to learn the game, but this setback only fueled his determination to master poker through self-study. By 2003, he was spending more time on poker than Magic, recognizing its greater earning potential.

After high school, Barbero studied law while working for his father, but Argentina's political crisis in 2001 forced him to reconsider his future. A friend's offer to go to France led him to move to Europe at age 22. His first live tournament cash came in July 2005, when he won a €500 No-Limit Hold'em event in Paris for €19,200. Two months later, he finished runner-up in a €540 Pot-Limit Omaha event at EPT Barcelona, earning €27,200. In 2008, he made a deep run in the WSOP Main Event, finishing 89th for $64,333, then a career-best. His first major breakthrough came in February 2010 when he won the $3,700 Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) Main Event in Punta del Este, Uruguay, for $279,330.

Barbero captured his second LAPT Main Event title in June 2010, winning the Lima, Peru edition for $250,000. Later that year, he took down the £20,000 High Roller at EPT London for £556,000 (approximately $870,082). These results earned him a spot on Team PokerStars, which he represented from 2010 to 2014. During this period, he consistently posted five-figure scores with occasional six-figure hauls. In January 2017, he finished sixth in the $25,000 PokerStars Championship High Roller in The Bahamas for $208,400. In July 2021, he reached the final table of the $5,000 WPT Venetian Main Event, finishing eighth for $115,685.

After many close calls, Barbero won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in June 2022, triumphing in Event #67: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Super Turbo Bounty for $587,520. In January 2023, he finished fourth in the $25,000 PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC) in The Bahamas for $1,551,300, his first seven-figure score. This marked a turning point in his career, propelling him into the highest-stakes tournaments worldwide.

Starting in March 2023, Barbero became a regular on the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series. He won a $15,000 buy-in event in Vietnam for $600,000 and placed second in a $25,000 event a few days later for $460,000. His career-best cash came in August 2023 as runner-up in the $200,000 NLHE 8-Handed event at Triton London, earning $3,445,807. In November 2023, he finished second in a $100,000 NLHE 8-Handed Triton event in Monte Carlo for $2,190,000. In April 2024, he won the €50,000 Super High Roller Second Chance at EPT Monte Carlo for €1,079,290. In 2025, he added two more seven-figure scores: $1,025,000 for a victory in a $30,000 Triton Montenegro event and $1,897,000 for a second-place finish at Triton Jeju. His top five live results also include a 4th place in the $25,000 PSPC for $1,551,300 and a 1st place in the €50,000 EPT Monte Carlo SHR for €1,079,290.

Barbero continued to perform at the highest level through 2025 and into 2026. In December 2025, he finished 8th in the $100,000 Triton Pot-Limit Omaha Main Event at WSOP Paradise for $345,000, and 8th in the $75,000 Triton PLO 6-Handed for $247,000. In March 2026, he placed 30th in the $100,000 Triton Jeju Main Event for $157,000. His consistent high-stakes performances have kept him among the top earners in the game, with total live earnings exceeding $30 million according to multiple sources.

Barbero is known for his brash, aggressive, loose-aggressive playing style and adaptability across formats. He is equally comfortable in No-Limit Hold'em and Pot-Limit Omaha, as evidenced by his deep runs in both. He was a member of Team PokerStars from 2010 to 2014 and later joined ACR as a Team Pro in 2023. With over $30 million in live earnings, he is one of the most successful players from Latin America, ranking 42nd on the All Time Money List (as of early 2026). He holds a WSOP bracelet, 176 WSOP cashes, and 36 WSOP final tables.

Barbero honed his skills in online poker cash games before transitioning to tournaments. He has an extensive online record, including multiple six-figure scores on platforms such as PokerStars. In April 2023, he joined ACR (Americas Cardroom) as a team pro, an unregulated online poker room. In 2025, eagle-eyed users on X (formerly Twitter) spotted what appeared to be a GTO Wizard chart visible on Barbero's screen during a livestream on ACR, sparking controversy. The incident led to discussions about the use of real-time assistance (RTA) in online poker, though no official action was taken.

Barbero's journey from a Magic: The Gathering enthusiast to a multi-millionaire poker pro is an inspiration in the Latin American poker community. He has accumulated over 176 WSOP cashes and 36 WSOP final tables, with $8.5 million in WSOP earnings alone. His GPI rank as of early 2025 is 89th globally. With more than $30 million in live tournament earnings, he sits comfortably in the top 50 of poker's all-time money list and continues to add to his legacy by competing in the most prestigious events worldwide.
