Sam Farha

Sam Farha (born Ihsan Farha) was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and later moved to the United States, settling in Houston, Texas. He began his professional poker career in the 1990s, quickly establishing a unique image in the poker world with his highly aggressive loose-aggressive style (LAG) and his love for cigars.

Farha has performed exceptionally well in WSOP events, winning three gold bracelets. Among them, in 2010 WSOP Event #25: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better, he defeated many top players to win the championship, earning $488,237. Additionally, he finished sixth in 2008 WSOP Event #8: $10,000 Mixed Event ($85,728), and 11th in 2012 WSOP Event #39: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha ($43,076).

Farha's most famous WSOP result came in the 2003 Main Event, where he finished as runner-up, winning $1,300,000. In that tournament's final table, a key hand against Chris Moneymaker (Farha moved all-in with J-10 and was outdrawn by Moneymaker's A-8) is considered a catalyst for the poker boom, fueling the global poker craze.

Beyond the WSOP, Farha has also achieved success in many large tournaments. In the 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship, he finished third, earning $125,000. He has also appeared multiple times on televised high-stakes cash games, such as High Stakes Poker, further solidifying his legendary status. As of 2025, his total live tournament earnings are approximately $2,996,618.

Farha is known for his loose-aggressive style, excelling at applying pressure from disadvantageous positions, betting and raising with a wide range. His highly creative bluffs (bluff) and precise reading of opponents are his trademark characteristics. At the tables, he is almost always seen with a cigar in his mouth, earning him the nickname "Smoking Sam", an image that has become a classic symbol of poker culture.

Sam Farha holds a unique place in poker history. The hand from the 2003 Main Event not only changed his personal career but also profoundly impacted the entire poker industry. He demonstrated that aggressive play could gain an edge against tight-passive opponents, while also reminding future generations of the risks of over-aggression. Today, Farha remains active in WSOP and other events, continuing his legendary career.
