4Bet from BTN

In preflop, the player on the button re-raises the opponent's 3-bet.

Overview

4Bet from BTN refers to a player on the button (BTN) re-raising an opponent's three-bet (3bet) pre-flop in No-Limit Texas Hold'em. It is a common counter-strategy, often used to show strength, seize initiative, or use positional advantage to force an opponent to fold.

Strategic Significance

As the button is the position with the best post-flop advantage, the 4bet range from the button is typically wider than from the blinds, including both value hands and bluffs. Common value ranges include strong hands like QQ+, AK, while bluff ranges may include hands like A5s, KQs that have good blocking effects. By 4betting, the button player can compress the opponent's range, collect dead money from the pot, and continue applying pressure post-flop using positional advantage.

Considerations

  • Against tight-aggressive opponents, 4bet cautiously to avoid being trapped by a 5bet re-raise.
  • Consider effective stack depth: under deep stacks, post-flop play after a 4bet call must be considered; with short stacks, one can be more aggressive.
  • Note the opponent's 3bet frequency: against high-frequency 3bettors, you can widen your 4bet range; against low-frequency players, it should be value-oriented.

Example

Assume blinds 1/2, effective stacks 200. The button opens to 6, small blind folds, big blind 3bets to 22. The button holds A♠K♠, and can 4bet to about 55. This can extract value and also force the big blind to fold some marginal hands.
