BB C-Bet

BB C-Bet

A continuation bet made by the player in the big blind position, either as the pre-flop raiser or (more commonly) as the pre-flop caller who leads out on the flop.

Overview

The term "BB C-Bet" refers to a continuation bet made from the big blind (BB) position. In standard poker terminology, a continuation bet (c-bet) is a bet made by the pre-flop aggressor on the flop. However, the BB C-Bet can occur in two distinct scenarios:

  1. BB as pre-flop raiser: When the big blind raises before the flop (e.g., following limpers or a steal attempt), and then bets on the flop – this is a traditional c-bet from position.
  2. BB as pre-flop caller: When the big blind calls a raise (usually from late position) and then leads out on the flop. This action is not a true continuation bet because the BB was not the pre-flop aggressor, but it is often colloquially called a "BB C-Bet" in modern strategy discussions, especially in heads-up or short-handed play.

Common Usage and Strategy

The second scenario – betting out from the BB after calling a raise – is more frequently discussed. This move is aggressive and can represent a strong hand, a draw, or a strategic attempt to deny equity from the original raiser. It often serves as a range check or a way to exploit a perceived weakness in the opponent's c-bet frequency. Typically, the BB will use a polarized betting range (strong value and bluffs) when leading into the pre-flop raiser.

Key Considerations

  • Position: The BB acts first on the flop, so a lead bet can force the pre-flop raiser to react, potentially simplifying decision-making.
  • Board Texture: A BB C-Bet is more common on dry, low boards where the BB's range connects well (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors).
  • Opponent Tendencies: Against frequent c-betters, the BB can leverage a lead to protect equity; against tight opponents, it can be used to steal the pot.
