BB Single Raised Pot Preflop Strategy

BB Single Raised Pot Preflop Strategy

Term: BB Single Raised Pot Preflop Strategy Refers to the range and action call, raise, fold strategy adopted by the big blind when facing a raise from a non-blind position and all other players have folded.

Overview

BB Single Raised Pot Preflop Strategy is a common preflop decision scenario in Texas Hold'em cash games or tournaments. When the Big Blind (BB) has not yet acted, if a non-blind player (e.g., UTG, middle position, or BTN) opens the pot with a raise (RFI) and all other players (including the small blind) fold, the BB faces a "Single Raised Pot" situation. The BB has the last action and has already invested 1 big blind. Therefore, a strategy must be developed based on the opponent's raise size, position, hand strength, stack depth, and opponent tendencies.

Core Factors

  • Opponent Raise Size: Modern standard raise sizes are around 2.5-3 BB. When the raise size is larger, the BB's pot odds for calling worsen, so the range should be tighter; conversely, smaller raises allow for a wider calling range.
  • Stack Depth: In deep stacked situations (>100 BB), the BB can call with more speculative hands (e.g., small pocket pairs, suited connectors) to hit big hands postflop. In short stacked situations (<40 BB), the range should be tighter, leaning toward all-in or fold.
  • Opponent Position: The earlier the opponent's position (e.g., UTG), the stronger their range, so the BB should be tighter. The later the position (e.g., BTN), the wider the opponent's range, allowing the BB to defend more loosely.
  • Hand Strength: Strong hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) are often 3-bet. Medium hands (e.g., AJo, KQo, small pocket pairs) are usually called. Weak hands (e.g., trash) are folded.

Typical Strategy Example

Assume effective stack of 100 BB, opponent raises to 3 BB from BTN. The BB's typical range:

  • 3-bet (Value): QQ+, AK, sometimes JJ, AQ. Roughly 3-5% of total range.
  • 3-bet (Bluff): A2s-A5s (small suited aces), KQo, etc., using blockers and postflop playability.
  • Call: Small to medium pocket pairs (22-99), suited connectors (65s+), AJo, KQo, ATs, etc. Roughly 30-40% of total range.
  • Fold: All other junk hands.

The specific range should be adjusted based on opponent tendencies: if the opponent raises frequently, the BB can increase 3-bet bluffs and call wider; if the opponent is tight, tighten up.

Cautions

Over-defending or under-defending from the BB leads to long-term losses. A good strategy balances value and bluffs, and plays cautiously given the positional disadvantage (acting first postflop). In tournaments, ICM pressure must be considered, avoiding excessive risk near the bubble.
