In practice, it refers to a limp-fold. This play is rarely taught in modern GTO strategies and is mostly seen in very passive, deep-stacked games.
When to Use
The strategy may be applicable in cash games or tournaments where the table is loose-passive—many players limp, few raise. With a small pair, the player hopes to see a cheap flop and hit a set. If raised, the small pair lacks implied odds to continue, especially out of position. The CO position is relatively late, but still not the button, so post-flop play can be awkward. The term “paired” explicitly indicates the hand is a pocket pair, not a paired board.
Example
In a 1/2 no-limit hold’em game, the under-the-gun limps, the hijack limps, and the CO holds 55. The CO limps as well (calling the big blind). The button raises to 8 big blinds. The CO folds, following the “check-fold paired” plan. This avoids a marginal call that would rarely be profitable.

- Game selection: Only effective in passive games. In aggressive games, you will often face a raise anyway and lose your limp.
- Stack depth: Deep stacks (100+ big blinds) improve implied odds for set mining.
