Early Stage Turbo Strategy

早期快速赛策略

Term: Early Stage Turbo Strategy In the early stage of a Turbo Tournament, due to short blind levels and fast pace, a special strategy is adopted that is tight-aggressive, emphasizes hand quality, and actively steals blinds.

Context: Term article: Early Stage Turbo Strategy

Strategy Background

Turbo tournaments have blind levels of 3-5 minutes, much faster than regular tournaments (e.g., 10-15 minutes). In the early stages, players' stacks are still deep relative to the blinds (typically 100-200 big blinds), but because blinds increase rapidly, effective stack depth quickly diminishes.

Core Principles

  • Tighten starting hand range: Due to fast blind increases, each hand has a high opportunity cost. Early on, mainly play strong hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+), avoiding marginal hands (e.g., small suited connectors) against opponents' raises.
  • Aggressively isolate and steal blinds: When blinds are higher, raise with a wider range in good position, especially when the blind players have deep stacks and high fold rates.
  • Be cautious against raises: Facing preflop raises, tend to fold unless holding a strong hand, to avoid depleting chips too quickly and getting into trouble.
  • Avoid battling aggressive players: Early on, if you notice a player frequently raising or 3-betting, consider staying out of their way and wait for a better spot.

Postflop Strategy

  • Higher c-bet frequency: Since opponents' ranges are often wide, when you hit top pair or a draw on the flop, continue betting to force folds.
  • Control the pot: If the flop does not improve your hand, be cautious and avoid putting in too many chips.
  • Utilize flop fold equity: In turbo tournaments, due to blind pressure, opponents tend to fold on the flop more often than in regular tournaments; take advantage of this.

Example

At blind level 100/200 in early stage, effective stack is 20,000. You are on the CO (cutoff) with A♠9♠, and all players before you fold. You can raise to 500-600, attempting to steal the blinds while avoiding deep-stacked battles with players behind.

Notes

  • This strategy does not apply to super turbo tournaments (blinds only 1-2 minutes), which require a more aggressive approach.
  • Adjust depending on opponent tendencies: if opponents are too conservative, widen your stealing range; if they are calling stations, tighten up and only value bet with strong hands.
