HJ Turn 4-Bet Pot

HJ Turn 4-Bet Pot

Term: HJ Turn 4-Bet Pot Refers to a pot where a preflop 4-bet occurred from the HJ Hijack position and the hand has reached the turn street.

Position and Action

HJ (Hijack) is the position to the left of UTG+1 in a nine-handed table, located after the under-the-gun position and before the cutoff. A preflop 4-bet usually indicates a very strong hand or a bluff, and the pot has already been inflated preflop. When no one folds on the flop and the turn is reached, players' ranges are narrow, mostly composed of strong hands like top pair or better, or draws.

Strategic Considerations

  • Range Analysis: The 4-bettor's range typically consists of QQ+/AK, or a few bluffs (e.g., A5s). The caller's range falls within TT+/AQ+ and some pairs.
  • Bet Sizing: The pot on the turn is large, so bets are usually around 50%-75% of the pot. Too small may fail to protect the hand; too large may chase away weak hands.
  • Position Advantage: HJ is at a positional disadvantage after 4-betting (acting first postflop), so decisions must be careful. With top pair or better, bet for value; with draws, consider a check-raise.

Common Mistakes

  • Mistakenly believing the 4-bettor must continuation bet. In reality, if the turn card is dangerous (e.g., a straight or flush draw board), checking to control the pot is also a reasonable option.
  • Ignoring range polarization. The 4-bettor's range includes very strong hands and bluffs; on the turn, maintain balance to avoid being exploited.

Example

Assume preflop HJ 4-bets, BTN calls. Flop K♥8♠2♦, HJ bets 2/3 pot, BTN calls. Turn Q♣. Here, HJ with AK should continue betting for value, while with QQ, consider whether it is beaten by an overpair.
