枪口位开池范围(UTG opening range)

UTG opening range

The typical UTG open-raising range (UTG: Under the Gun, first position to the left of the big blind) of starting hands used when a player raises first in preflop.

Position Characteristics

Under the Gun (UTG) is the earliest position to act in a nine-handed table, acting first post-flop with many players yet to act behind. This presents the greatest positional disadvantage and risk of being re-raised.

Range Principles

The UTG open-raising range is typically tight, focusing on high hand strength and starting hands that can play well in multi-way pots. Due to the poor post-flop position, marginal hands that could be re-raised or drag the player into difficult multi-way pots are avoided.

Typical Range Example

In a standard nine-handed cash game without antes, a common UTG open-raising range comprises about 10-15% of total starting hands, including:

  • Pairs: 22+ (note: 22-66 often require caution depending on opponents)
  • Suited connectors: Axs (e.g., ATs+), KXs (e.g., KTs+), QJs+, JTs
  • Unsuited high cards: AQo+, AKo
  • Big pairs: TT+ The exact range adjusts based on stack depths, opponent tendencies, tournament stage (ICM pressure), and other factors.

Strategic Considerations

  • Tight-Aggressive style: In most situations, UTG should raise rather than call to gain fold equity and reduce the number of opponents.
  • Responding to re-raises: Against tight-passive opponents, you can open continuously; against aggressive opponents, tighten your range and consider 4-bet or folding.
  • Balancing: Advanced players include a few bluffs in their UTG range (e.g., A5s, K9s) to balance value hands and avoid being exploited.

Influencing Factors

  • Ante structure: With antes, the pot is larger and the range can be slightly looser.
  • Opponent skill: Against weaker players, you can widen your value range; against strong players, be more cautious.
  • Post-flop skill: Players with strong post-flop skills can open a bit wider; those with weaker skills should play tighter.
