偷盲(steal blinds)

Pre-flop, a strategic action where a late-position player raises in an attempt to directly take the blinds.

Overview

Blind stealing is a common strategy in Texas Hold'em, typically executed by late-position players such as the button or small blind. The core objective is to leverage positional advantage and opponents' folding tendencies to win the blinds in the pot by raising when no one has entered the pot. Successfully stealing blinds not only directly increases your chip stack but also builds an aggressive table image.

Execution Timing

  • Position: The button (BTN) is the best position for blind stealing because it has absolute post-flop positional advantage; the cutoff (CO) also frequently executes it. Stealing from the small blind is less common due to the disadvantageous post-flop position.
  • Blind Size: When blinds are high, the potential reward for stealing is greater, but so is the risk.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Tight-passive blind players are easier to steal from; loose-aggressive players may fight back.

Raise Sizing

Typical blind-stealing raise sizes range from 2.5 to 3 big blinds (BB). For example, in a 100/200 blinds game, open-raise to 500-600. A raise that is too small may be called by the blinds, while one that is too large offers poor risk-reward.

Frequency Adjustment

  • Against tight-passive blind players, you can steal frequently.
  • Against blind players who defend often, reduce stealing frequency or use stronger starting hands.
  • Be mindful of your own image: if you have been caught stealing multiple times, tighten up appropriately.

Defense Against Blind Stealing (Re-steal)

Blind players counter blind stealing by 3-betting (re-raising) or calling, known as "defense." 3-betting is a common countermeasure, forcing the stealer to fold weak hands. Skilled players adjust their defensive strategies based on the opponent's stealing frequency and range.

Example

Suppose the blinds are 100/200, you are on the button with A♠9♠, and all players before you fold. You raise to 500, attempting to make the small and big blinds fold. If the big blind folds and the small blind calls, you have positional advantage post-flop.
