偷盲(blind steal)

blind steal

In Texas Hold'em, a strategy of raising from a position of advantage typically the button or cutoff in an attempt to force the small blind and big blind players to fold, thereby winning the blinds and antes outright.

Overview

Blind stealing is an important aggressive strategy in Texas Hold'em, typically occurring when action folds to the button or cutoff (CO). The player raises (usually 2.5-3 times the big blind) to pressure the small and big blinds, leveraging their fold equity to win the pot uncontested. The success of a steal depends on the tightness/weakness of the blind players, table image, and stack depth.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Positional Advantage: The button and cutoff are the best positions for stealing, as they act later and have more information.
  • Tight/Weak Blind Players: If the small and big blinds fold frequently (e.g., preflop fold rate above 70%), stealing is profitable.
  • Marginal Hand Strength: Even with marginal hands like A-7, K-10, suited connectors, etc., a steal attempt can be viable.
  • Healthy Stack: Stealing is safer with deep stacks; short stacks require caution, as they are vulnerable to re-raise all-ins.

Risks and Adjustments

  • Re-steal: The blinds may re-raise with strong hands or as a bluff. The stealer must assess the situation and avoid blindly continuing.
  • Frequency Balance: Stealing too often allows opponents to exploitatively re-raise. Therefore, mix in genuine value hands.
  • Opponent Reads: Against loose-aggressive players (high re-steal rate), reduce stealing or trap with strong hands.

Mathematical Basis

The breakeven point of a steal depends on the raise size and fold equity. For example: a standard steal raise to 3 big blinds (BB) with a pot of 1.5 BB requires a fold rate of at least (3 / (3+1.5)) = 66.7% to show immediate profit. In practice, subsequent action (re-raises or calls) must also be considered.

Example

Assume blinds are 10/20 with effective stacks of 2000. The button folds, and the cutoff raises to 60 with 7-8 suited. The big blind folds, the small blind folds, and the cutoff wins the 30 pot. This is a typical blind steal.
