Light 4-Bet Exploit

轻量4-bet剥削

**Context: Term: Light 4-Bet Exploit** A strategy of 4-betting with a wider range against opponents who frequently 3-bet, punishing their excessive aggression.

Context: Term article: Light 4-Bet Exploit

Overview

A light 4-bet exploit is an adjustment strategy targeting specific opponents. When observing that an opponent frequently 3-bets preflop (especially with a wide range), a player can choose to 4-bet with a wider range than usual, forcing the opponent to fold or enter an unfavorable situation. The core of this strategy is to exploit the opponent's over-aggression rather than relying on the strength of one's own hand.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Opponent characteristics: This strategy is mainly applicable to players whose 3-bet frequency is significantly higher than average (e.g., over 10% or higher), especially when they 3-bet from the button or small blind against an open raise from the button or cutoff.
  • Position advantage: It is generally recommended to use this strategy when in position, for example, 4-betting from the button or cutoff against a 3-bet from the blinds, so that even if called, you still have a positional advantage postflop.
  • Effective stack depth: Typically used when the effective stack depth is around 100 big blinds (or deeper), to avoid committing too much of the stack preflop and losing flexibility.

Strategy Details

  • Range composition: The light 4-bet range usually includes some medium-to-weak hands such as small pairs (22-66), suited connectors (e.g., 76s, 87s), and some suited aces (A2s-A5s, etc.). Although these hands lack raw strength, they have good playability and help balance the 4-bet range with strong hands (e.g., AA, KK, AK).
  • Frequency control: Avoid overusing this strategy. Generally, the 4-bet frequency should not exceed 3%-5% of total open raises, otherwise you risk being counter-exploited by the opponent.
  • Facing a raise: When an opponent 5-bets against a light 4-bet, you should typically fold unless you hold a top-tier hand.

Example

Suppose in a $1/$2 cash game with effective stacks of $200. On the button, you open-raise to $6 with 8♣7♣, and the small blind (known for a 15% 3-bet frequency) 3-bets to $20. At this point, you can 4-bet to around $45 with 8♣7♣, expecting the opponent to fold. If the opponent 5-bets, fold.

Notes

  • This strategy is not suitable against all opponents. If the opponent's 3-bet range is tight or they are unwilling to fold to 4-bets, revert to standard play.
  • In tournaments, consider ICM factors, as a light 4-bet can carry excessive risk.
