Concept

The thin value bet baseline is the critical threshold for evaluating whether a hand can get called by worse hands. A thin value bet (Light Value Bet) refers to betting with moderately strong hand strength, expecting to be called by worse hands rather than forcing folds. The baseline changes dynamically based on opponent ranges, bet sizing, board texture, and other factors.

Purpose

• Helps players avoid over-betting or missing value. Bets below the baseline are often viewed as bluffs or ineffective; bets above the baseline may cause opponents to only call with better hands if the bet is too large.
• In limit Texas Hold'em, the baseline typically corresponds to a hand strength "threshold," e.g., top pair weak kicker or middle pair on a dry board may constitute a thin value bet.

Adjustment Factors

• Opponent Tendencies: Against calling station opponents, lower the baseline; against tight-aggressive opponents, raise it.
• Position: From late position, the baseline can be lowered slightly due to having more information.
• Board Texture: On dry boards (e.g., rainbow with no draws), the baseline is lower; on wet boards (with possible straights or flushes), raise the baseline.
• Stack Depth: With deep stacks, the baseline increases because implied odds are greater.

Example

Suppose you hold top pair top kicker on a rainbow flop. If your opponent's range includes many worse top pairs, this hand is above the baseline and suitable for a thin value bet. If the opponent's range mainly consists of folds or strong hands, then the bet may become a bluff or value bet (depending on the situation).
