Nine Four Offsuit

Overview

Nine Four Offsuit (abbreviated as 94o) is widely considered one of the worst starting hands in Texas Hold'em. Due to the large gap in card values (five points apart) and being offsuit, it can hardly form a straight or flush draw, making it very difficult to build a strong hand post-flop.

Pre-flop Strategy

In a standard 6-max or 9-max game, 94o typically falls into an absolute fold range. The only possible scenario for entering the pot is from the big blind when no one raises, allowing a free flop. However, even then, it is not recommended to voluntarily bet. Some recreational players may call due to "itchy fingers," but this is a serious mistake that leads to significant long-term losses.

Common Post-flop Situations

If you insist on playing 94o, hitting a good hand on the flop is very unlikely. The probability of flopping top pair with a 9 or 4 is extremely low (about 3.6%), and even when you hit a pair, there is often a risk of a higher kicker. For example, on a flop of 9-7-2, holding 94 gives you top pair of nines, but your kicker of 4 is very weak, putting you at a disadvantage against any player holding J9, Q9, or even T9. Additionally, due to the lack of connectedness, the chance of flopping a straight draw is minimal—only in rare cases like a flop of 6-7-8, 5-6-7, or 5-7-8 do you get an open-ended straight draw, and those are extremely improbable.

Common Mistakes

• Calling from the small blind or button because it's "cheap" in a multi-way pot, hoping to get lucky. In reality, 94o's equity against any two random cards pre-flop is below 50%, and even weaker against multiple opponents.
• Over-calling post-flop when hitting bottom pair or middle pair, as the poor kicker leaves you vulnerable to being dominated.
