Overview

A 17-Out Wrap is a powerful straight draw type in Omaha, indicating that the player has 17 different cards that can complete a straight. Since Omaha uses four hole cards, straight draws have more possibilities. A Wrap refers to a combination of straight draws in multiple directions.

Calculation of Outs

17 outs means the player currently has no made hand, but 17 cards remaining in the deck can complete their straight. For example, holding J-10-9-8 on a flop of Q-7-2, any K, J, 10, 9, 8, or 6 can complete the straight (some duplicates), totaling about 17 (after accounting for known cards). Actual calculation must consider the remaining cards in the deck.

Strategic Implications

A 17-out wrap is a strong draw and often has high equity, especially on the flop. However, due to Omaha’s high showdown value, decisions must be based on pot odds and opponent ranges. Typical plays include:

  • Betting or raising aggressively on the flop to generate fold equity and build the pot.
  • Avoiding over-committing on the turn if the draw does not improve, as the draw’s strength drops significantly once missed.

Example

Hand: K♠ Q♣ J♦ 10♥, Flop: 9♠ 8♥ 2♣. Here, any 7, 10, J, Q, K, or A (20 cards total, but some duplicates) yields about 17 actual outs. This is a classic 17-out wrap.

Notes

When a wrap draw misses on the river, it often can only be used as a bluff or must be folded. Also, be aware that opponents may hold larger straight draws or flush draws, blocking some of your outs.
