In poker, a subgame is a portion of the overall game tree that starts at a specific decision point and includes all subsequent actions, outcomes, and payoffs from that point onward.
What is a Subgame in Poker?
A subgame is a key concept in game theory applied to poker. It refers to a smaller, self-contained part of the full game tree that begins at a particular decision node (e.g., after a specific bet sizing or on a particular street) and includes all subsequent branches and terminal payoffs. Analyzing subgames allows players and solvers to simplify complex strategic situations by focusing on decisions from that point forward, assuming optimal play from all participants in the remainder of the game.
Usage in Poker Strategy
Subgame analysis is central to modern Game Theory Optimal (GTO) study. Solvers like PioSolver or GTO+ break the full game tree into subgames to compute equilibrium strategies efficiently. For example, a solver may isolate a subgame starting from the flop after a specific preflop action (e.g., a 3-bet and a call). Within that subgame, the solver assumes both players play optimally from the flop onward, ignoring earlier actions’ history except as captured by the current state.
Subgame Perfection
A concept closely related is subgame perfect equilibrium (SPE). In poker, a strategy profile is subgame perfect if it prescribes optimal actions at every possible decision point, even in subgames that are not reached under the equilibrium path. This ensures that threats or promises made in earlier rounds are credible. For example, if a player’s strategy on the river depends on their turn actions, those turn actions must themselves be optimal given the subgame starting at the turn.
Practical Implications
In practice, subgame analysis helps players identify optimal responses to opponents’ ranges in narrow spots. For instance, facing a specific bet size on the turn, a player can treat that spot as a subgame and compute the unexploitable frequency of calling, raising, or folding, using range vs. range reasoning. Advanced players also use subgame concepts to detect leaks: if an opponent plays suboptimally in a repeated subgame, the exploit can be precisely targeted.
Limitations
Subgame analysis assumes players have perfect recall of the game state and act optimally thereafter. In human play, deviations (tilt, pattern-based reads) may reduce the practical value of pure subgame reasoning. However, as a theoretical tool, it remains foundational for understanding poker’s strategic complexity.
