WTSD

WTSD (Went to Showdown) is a poker statistic that measures the percentage of hands in which a player sees a showdown after seeing the flop.

Overview

WTSD (Went to Showdown) is a key statistic used in online poker tracking software (e.g., PokerTracker, Hold'em Manager) to analyze a player's tendency to reach showdown. It is expressed as a percentage and is calculated by dividing the number of hands where the player saw the showdown by the total number of hands where they saw the flop (or sometimes the total hands played, depending on the software's definition). Typically, it is measured as: (Hands that went to showdown) / (Hands that saw the flop) × 100.

Interpretation

  • Low WTSD (e.g., < 25%): Indicates a player who folds frequently after the flop. Such players are often tight or post-flop fit-or-fold types. They may be bluffing less and require stronger hands to continue.
  • High WTSD (e.g., > 35%): Suggests a player who is loose post-flop and tends to call down frequently. This can be a sign of a calling station or a player who bluffs often and gets caught. However, high WTSD combined with high aggression can indicate a maniac.
  • Average WTSD: For many regular players, WTSD falls in the 25-35% range, but it varies by game type and position.

Practical Uses

  • Player Profiling: Combine WTSD with other stats like VPIP, PFR, and Aggression Factor (AF) to build a profile. For example, a player with high VPIP (many hands preflop) but low WTSD folds often post-flop, suggesting they play many speculative hands and miss. Conversely, low VPIP and high WTSD indicates a tight player who sees showdown with many of their starting hands.
  • Exploitation: Against a high WTSD opponent (calling station), value bet thin and avoid bluffing. Against a low WTSD opponent, continuation bets and bluffs can be more effective as they fold easily.
  • Leak Detection: A high WTSD with low W$SD (Won Money at Showdown) suggests the player is losing money when they reach showdown, often due to calling with weak hands. A low WTSD with low W$SD may indicate too much folding with equity.

Limitations

  • Sample size matters: WTSD stabilizes over thousands of hands. Until then, it can be misleading.
  • WTSD does not account for hand strength or board texture; it is purely a frequency stat.
  • Different software may define the denominator differently (e.g., all hands vs. only those that saw flop). Always check the tracker's default settings.

Related Terms

  • W$SD (Won Money at Showdown): Percentage of showdowns won.
  • VPIP (Voluntarily Put Money In Pot): Preflop looseness.
  • PFR (Preflop Raise): Preflop aggression.
  • AF (Aggression Factor): Post-flop aggression frequency.
