This means the big blind must defend at least 60% of hands, otherwise the opponent can profit unconditionally.

Note: MDF is a theoretical minimum defense frequency, but in actual play, due to factors like position, range, and stack depth, we often do not strictly adhere to MDF; instead, we adjust based on the opponent's range.

Principle: Relationship Between Position and Big Blind Defense Frequency

The big blind is the last player to act preflop and has already invested 1BB as a forced bet. Against opens from different positions, the big blind's defense strategy needs specific adjustments for the following reasons:

  1. Better position means stronger range. For example, UTG's opening range is typically tight, while BTN's range is much wider. Therefore, against UTG, the big blind should defend more tightly because the opponent has a higher proportion of strong hands and we are out of position (acting first postflop); against BTN, defense can be wider because the opponent's range is weaker and we get better pot odds to call.

  2. Pot odds differences. When the opponent opens to 3BB, the big blind needs to pay 2BB to win 4.5BB (1.5+3), giving pot odds of 2:4.5 ≈ 31%. That is, if our hand's equity against the opponent's range exceeds 31%, calling is profitable. However, defense frequency must also consider postflop playability, not just equity.

In practice, since UTG's range is strong, the big blind can fold some marginal hands, defending about 30%-35%, and should prefer hands with good structure (connectors, pairs) rather than weak AXo like A2o.

  • Against CO (3BB): CO's range is wider than UTG but still stronger than BTN. MDF remains 33.3%, but actual defense frequency can increase to 35%-40%. Because CO may bluff more often, we can more easily call with medium-strength hands.

For example, defending 30% of hands against a UTG who only opens AA is a huge mistake.

  2. Ignoring positional disadvantage. The big blind is in the worst position postflop. Even if a hand's equity is sufficient, playability must be considered. For instance, K9o might have nearly 31% equity against UTG's opening range, but it is extremely difficult to play postflop and often leads to passive situations. It is generally better to defend more speculative hands and avoid trash hands.

  3. Thinking MDF is fixed. MDF changes with bet size and is also affected by stack depth. With deep stacks, speculative hands become more valuable, and defense frequency can be slightly below MDF; with short stacks, defense should be more aggressive, even to the point of shoving.
