North Carolina amateur player Grant Tharrington wins 2026 WSOP Main Event seat

Amateur poker player Grant Tharrington from a small town in North Carolina won a WSOP Main Event seat giveaway, earning a $10,000 ticket to the 2026 WSOP Main Event, realizing his dream leap from online entertainment to the world championship stage.
Las Vegas, July 1, 2026 — For a poker enthusiast from a small town in North Carolina, a seemingly impossible dream is about to become reality. Grant Tharrington has been selected as the winner of the 2026 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event seat giveaway, earning a $10,000 ticket to compete in poker's most prestigious tournament.
While thousands of players around the globe dream of one day battling in the WSOP Main Event, this giveaway turned the dream of a recreational player who never thought he'd have a chance to step onto poker's biggest stage into reality.
From the Moneymaker Era to the Main Event Stage
As the 2026 WSOP Main Event kicks off tomorrow at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, Tharrington will join thousands of players from around the world vying for poker's most coveted title and the chance to become the next world champion.
For Tharrington, the journey to the WSOP Main Event began over two decades ago during one of poker's most influential eras. "I started playing poker during the Moneymaker era," Tharrington said. "Initially on PokerStars and Full Tilt. I've been playing for over 20 years, but only sporadically online with little live experience. I've only been to the WSOP Circuit in Cherokee and played live there. I'm definitely not a GTO-studying player, but I believe I can hold my own."
Like countless poker fans inspired by Chris Moneymaker's historic 2003 WSOP Main Event victory, Tharrington discovered the game during the poker boom. Unlike professionals who dedicate themselves to mastering game theory and grinding a dense tournament schedule, Tharrington has always been an enthusiastic recreational player, testing his skills in occasional live events between everyday life. His live tournament experience is mainly limited to the WSOP Circuit in Cherokee, North Carolina — making the leap from regional events to the WSOP Main Event one of the biggest jumps in poker tournaments.
The Dramatic Winning Moment
It's precisely this dramatic leap that makes the WSOP Main Event seat giveaway so special. Every year, poker fans dream of competing for the world championship, but for many players, the $10,000 buy-in is an insurmountable financial hurdle. For Tharrington, that barrier was simply too high. "I've never played in the WSOP Main Event," he explained. "Honestly, I never thought I would. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. I'm from a small town in northwestern North Carolina, and spending $10,000 on a poker tournament is just not realistic for me."
Now, Tharrington won't just be watching poker's biggest event from afar — he'll walk into the tournament hall at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas to compete alongside poker legends, bracelet winners, online qualifiers, and amateurs from around the world.
Tharrington was announced as the winner on the daily WSOP Countdown show. The moment he found out is one he'll never forget. Instead of anxiously watching the live drawing, he went about his day as usual. Purely by coincidence, he tuned into the stream the next day only to discover that everyone was talking about him. "I nearly choked on a chicken tender from KFC," Tharrington recalled. "I missed the Countdown show where they announced the winner, and honestly, I'd forgotten about the drawing. I happened to be watching the next day's WSOP Countdown live stream, and then my name came up in the discussion. Understatement to say I was shocked."
For someone who never thought his name would be associated with the WSOP Main Event, it was a surreal moment. Now, instead of fantasizing about what it would be like to play in the world championship, Tharrington is preparing to sit down among thousands of players chasing poker immortality.
A Grateful Mindset
While every Main Event player dreams of reaching the final table, Tharrington feels more gratitude than expectation. "It's crazy to think all this could happen," he said. "How am I going to be playing in the Main Event this weekend?! Going deeper could be life-changing. I'd pay off debts, consider investing a portion, and hope to give back in some way. This is a wonderful gift given to me, and I'm so grateful for this opportunity. I don't feel like I need to win or go deep to prove anything. I just want to enjoy the experience and make the most of it."
That mindset perfectly captures what makes the WSOP Main Event unique. Though millions of dollars are awarded each summer, the event means much more than money. It represents the chance for an average player to compete against the world's best, create lifelong memories, and perhaps write their own poker legend.
Tharrington also wants to share this journey with poker fans. "I can do it, but I'm not great at that kind of thing," he said. "But I want to enjoy it, and the fact that other people might want to come along on this ride with me is really cool."
Whether his run lasts just one day or goes deep into the tournament, Tharrington has already accomplished something extraordinary. This player, who for years enjoyed poker from his home in northwestern North Carolina, will now appear in the same event that has crowned legends and created countless iconic poker moments.
When the 2026 WSOP Main Event kicks off on ESPN, Grant Tharrington will be more than just a name on the entry list. He will represent countless recreational players who fell in love with poker during the Moneymaker boom, continued playing for fun, and never gave up their dream of one day taking a shot at poker's ultimate prize.
