John Juanda

John Juanda was born on 8 July 1971 in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, into a Hoklo Chinese family. He excelled in track and field during high school, specializing in distances from 200 meters to 5,000 meters. In 1990, he moved to the United States to study at Oklahoma State University, later earning an MBA from Seattle University. To support himself through school, Juanda worked various jobs, including selling bibles door-to-door. He speaks Mandarin Chinese and English and currently resides in Tokyo, Japan.

Juanda began playing poker in local casinos while attending university. After completing his MBA in 1996, he moved California to pursue poker professionally, seeking larger stakes. He quickly made a name for himself, cashing in two events at the 1999 World Series of Poker. The following year, he notched another WSOP cash and finished second at the United States Poker Championships. In 2001 and 2002, Juanda was named Card Player Magazine's Tournament Player of the Year, a testament to his early dominance. During this period, he won four World Series of Poker bracelets and a World Poker Open Championship title. He also took third in the 2012 WPT World Championship $100,000 Super High Roller ($526,320). In 2008, he finished runner-up to Jason Mercier in the EPT London £1 Million Showdown (a £20,000 high roller event), earning £327,000 ($598,770). He won his first EPT title in 2015 at the EPT Barcelona Main Event, taking €1,022,593 ($1,186,208). Earlier, in 2010, he placed second in the EPT London Main Event for $856,372. Beyond the EPT, Juanda won the A$100,000 Speed Poker event at the 2006 Crown Australian Poker Championship for $732,901, defeating a field that included Jeff Lisandro, Mike Sexton, Barry Greenstein, and Phil Ivey. In 2005, he won the Monte Carlo Millions Consolation tournament and finished sixth in the Main Event.
