MP

中间位置

Context: Poker term: Middle Position (MP) MP (Middle Position) is a seat area in Texas Hold'em located after UTG (Under the Gun) and before CO (Cutoff), typically including UTG+1 and UTG+2 (in a 9-handed table). Its core function is to define players' preflop action order and relative positional advantage: MP has more information than early position because it can observe the actions of early position players, but it lacks positional control compared to late position (CO, BTN). In practice, MP's starting hand range should be slightly wider than early position, including medium pairs, suited connectors, etc., but still requires caution to avoid being squeezed or slow-played by late position players. MP players need to balance aggression and conservatism, using positional advantage to make decisions postflop based on opponents' ranges, while guarding against blind steals or raises from late position players.

Middle Position (MP)

Position Overview

MP (Middle Position) is an important position category in Texas Hold'em. In a full-ring game (9 or 10 players), MP typically refers to the position after the UTG (under the gun) and before the hijack (HJ). Depending on the number of players, MP can be further divided into MP1 and MP2. For example, in a 9-handed game, the two positions after UTG are MP1 and MP2.

Position Characteristics

MP is in the middle position, neither lacking information like early position nor having the absolute information advantage of late position. Preflop, an MP player can observe the actions of early position players but still has players in later positions yet to act, requiring caution.

Strategy Points

  • Hand Range: MP's starting hand range should be slightly wider than early position, but still be mindful of squeezes and re-raises from later positions. Typical playable hands include:
    • Big pairs (TT+)
    • Strong Aces (AJs+, AQo+)
    • Suited connectors (e.g., T9s, JTs)
    • Some medium pairs and suited connectors (e.g., 77-99, 87s)
  • Raising and Calling: MP typically enters pots with a raise to avoid excessive limping, which can be exploited by later positions. When facing an early position raise, MP can call or re-raise with a wider range.
  • Postflop: After the flop, MP is usually in a middle position and must make decisions based on board texture and opponent ranges. Since later positions still have the right to act, MP should be cautious when bluffing.

Example

In a 9-handed game, UTG folds, MP1 holds AKo and raises to 3BB, MP2 holds 99 and calls, later positions fold. The flop comes K-7-2 rainbow. MP1 makes a continuation bet, and MP2 folds.
