Middle Position

Middle Position

Term: Middle Position Middle Position refers to the seats in a full-ring game that are after the under-the-gun UTG positions and before the hijack, typically including specific seats like MP1, MP2, etc. In practice, players in middle position have already observed the actions of earlier positions before the flop, gaining more information, but players in later positions still hold positional advantage. Therefore, hand selection must be cautious, avoiding weak hands that could lead to multi-way pots. Typical scenario: In a 9-handed table, you are in MP1 with AJo. The early position players fold, and you choose to raise. However, if a later position player is aggressive, they might re-raise, forcing you to fold. Thus, middle position is suitable for opening with moderately strong hands and controlling the pot size.

Position Overview

Middle Position (MP) is an important position category in Texas Hold'em, located after the early positions (Under the Gun / UTG) and before the late positions (Hijack, Button). In a standard 9-handed full ring game, Middle Position typically includes two specific seats: MP1 (UTG+1) and MP2 (UTG+2). In a 6-handed short-handed game, Middle Position usually refers to the position immediately after UTG (the gun position), i.e., MP.

Position Characteristics and Strategy

Middle Position has a moderate advantage preflop: it has more information than early positions (since it can observe the actions of the UTG player), but less information than late positions (there are still Hijack, Button, etc., yet to act). Therefore, the starting hand range for Middle Position should be slightly wider than UTG's, but caution is still required.

Preflop Strategy

  • Raising Range: Typically includes all pairs (22+), all suited connectors (e.g., 56s+), all Ax hands (A2s+, A9o+), and some high cards (KJo+, QJo+). The specific range should be adjusted based on opponent style and stack depth.
  • Facing a Raise: When facing a raise from UTG, Middle Position should call or re-raise with a tighter range, avoiding getting involved in multi-way pots with marginal hands.
  • Isolation Raise: If earlier players limp, Middle Position can raise with a wider range to isolate, but must be cautious of possible re-raises from players yet to act behind.

Postflop Strategy

Middle Position is often at a disadvantage postflop, as there are still players behind who have yet to act. Therefore, after the flop, Middle Position should be more inclined to continuation bet (C-bet) to represent a strong hand, and be careful when drawing or holding marginal made hands. In multi-way pots, Middle Position should avoid excessive bluffing, as players behind may hold strong hands.
