UTG

枪口位

Context: Poker term: 枪口位(UTG) [UTG] is the abbreviation for "Under The Gun", referring to the [UTG] position, which is the first position to the left of the [big blind]. In a [full ring] game (9 or 10 players), UTG is the first to act pre-flop, thus having the least information and the highest risk. The core use is to emphasize that players in this position should only enter the pot with strong hands (e.g., high pairs, AK, AQ, etc.) to avoid marginal hands being raised or squeezed by later players. In practice, UTG players should strictly tighten their starting hand range, use positional disadvantage to minimize losses, and occasionally balance their range with raises to prevent opponents from easily reading their hand.

Position Overview

UTG is one of the most disadvantageous seats in Texas Hold'em. As the first to act preflop, the UTG player must make decisions without any information on other players' actions, so they typically only play the strongest starting hands.

Strategy Characteristics

  • Tight starting hand range: The UTG position usually plays only high pairs (AA, KK, QQ), strong high cards (AK, AQ), some medium pairs (JJ, TT), and suited connectors (e.g., AQs, KQs).
  • Raise sizing: Standard opens are typically 2.5-3 big blinds to control the pot and reduce opponents' implied odds for calling.
  • Avoid limping: Limping from UTG is generally weak, as it reveals hand strength and makes it easy for later players to isolate with a raise.

Post-Flop Action

UTG players are out of position (no positional advantage) post-flop, as subsequent players act after them on every street. Therefore, UTG players need to be more cautious with continuation bets and tend to bet on the flop with strong hands or draws, adjusting on the turn and river based on opponent reactions.
