In 1990, Berman co-founded Grand Casinos, focusing on developing casinos on Native American reservations in the United States, opening the first in Hinckley, Minnesota in 1991. He then ventured into themed dining by opening Rainforest Cafe in 1993 and served as its chairman and CEO from 1994 to 2000. He also owned the Stratosphere casino and suffered losses in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme in 2009. In 2015, his company Lakes Entertainment merged with Golden Gaming to form Golden Entertainment, where Berman continues as a director.
