The Poker Hall of Fame (PHOF) was established in 1979 by Benny Binion, owner of Binion's Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas, to honor poker's legendary players and contributors. Originally housed in the casino, it is now administered by World Series of Poker (WSOP) and recognized as the highest honor in poker. As of 2024, there are over 60 inductees, including players, writers, and executives who have significantly shaped the game.

Criteria for Induction

Eligibility requires that a player must have played poker against top competition, played for high stakes, played consistently well, gained the respect of peers, and passed the test of time. For non-players (contributors), they must have made significant contributions to the growth and development of poker. Additional criteria include a minimum age of 40 (for players) and a 10-year waiting period after first major achievement.

Selection Process

Each year, a nominating committee selects up to 12 finalists from candidates submitted by the public. The final selection is made by a panel of living Hall of Fame members and select poker media, with each voter casting exactly 10 votes. The nominee receiving the most votes (minimum 75% approval) is inducted. Typically, one or two inductees are chosen annually.

  • Doyle Brunson – Two-time WSOP Main Event champion and author of "Super/System."
  • Stu Ungar – Three-time WSOP Main Event winner, known for his exceptional talent.

  • Phil Hellmuth – Record holder for most WSOP bracelets (16+).
  • Chip Reese – Considered one of the best cash game players ever.
  • Jack Binion – Son of Benny Binion, who expanded the WSOP.
