Rubin Okotie
Austria
Rubin Okotie is an Austrian former professional footballer who played as a forward. He represented the Austria national team and competed in the UEFA European Championship in 2016.
Early Life and Career
Rubin Rafael Okotie was born on 6 June 1987 in Karachi, Pakistan, to an Austrian mother and a Nigerian father. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Barcelona, Spain, before immigrating to Vienna when he was four years old. He began his youth career at SC Wiener Viktoria (1994–1998) before joining Rapid Vienna's academy (1998–2001) and later the Frank-Stronach-Fußballakademie (2001–2005).
Club Career
Austria Vienna
Okotie made his professional debut for Austria Vienna in 2007 against SV Ried. He scored his first goal in 2008 in a 3–1 win over FC Red Bull Salzburg and was awarded the Austrian Bundesliga's Young Star of the Season award. In the 2008–09 season, he scored the opening goal in the Austrian Cup final to help the club win 3–1 over Trenkwalder Admira. A serious knee injury in 2009–10 limited him to seven appearances, but he returned to score 21 goals in 57 league appearances for the club.
1. FC Nürnberg
On 30 May 2010, Okotie signed a three-year contract with 1. FC Nürnberg, who had secured promotion to the Bundesliga. He struggled due to injuries and made limited appearances.
Later Clubs
Okotie had loan spells at Sint-Truiden (2011–2012) and SønderjyskE (2014), and played for Sturm Graz (2012–2013), 1860 Munich (2014–2016), Beijing Enterprises Group (2016–2017), and K Beerschot VA (2018–2019). He retired on 1 July 2019.
International Career
Okotie represented Austria at various youth levels (U19, U20, U21) and made his senior debut in 2008. He earned 18 FIFA caps and scored 2 goals for the national team. He was part of Austria's squad for the 2016 UEFA European Championship.
Legacy
Okotie is known as a centre-forward who also played as a right or left winger. His career spanned clubs in Austria, Germany, Belgium, China, and Denmark, and he represented Austria at the highest level.
