Vladimir Troyanovskiy was born on August 20, 1973 in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russia. He graduated from a technical university with a degree in mechanical engineering for trade and public catering enterprises—his course project was on a cabbage packaging line. Troyanovskiy was introduced to poker at age 13 by his older brother, playing classic 5 Card Draw. He began playing poker seriously in the early 2000s and became part of the "Saint Petersburg school" of players, alongside Vladimir Schemelev, Alexey Kuzmin, and Alexander Dovzhenko.

Troyanovskiy started playing live tournaments in 2003, initially in low-cost events in Russia and Europe. His first notable cash came in March 2007 at the European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final in Monte Carlo, where he finished 45th in the main event for €20,000. In September 2012, he cashed in two events at the World Series of Poker Europe in Cannes, including a 27th-place finish in the €10,450 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event (€22,982) and a 10th in Mixed Max (€20,443). His first live tournament victory came in April 2012 at the EPT Berlin, winning a heads-up event for €21,600.

Troyanovskiy's breakthrough came in January 2013 at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in the Bahamas. He reached the final table of both the $100,000 Super High Roller (7th, $257,580) and the $25,500 High Roller (2nd, $792,180), losing heads-up to Vanessa Selbst. This marked the first time he earned over $1 million in a single series. In May 2013, he finished fifth in the EPT Super High Roller in Monte Carlo for €340,000, and in August 2014 he took third in the same event in Barcelona for €470,000.

Throughout his career, Troyanovskiy has amassed 19 World Series of Poker cashes, mostly at WSOP Europe, with total WSOP earnings of $464,000. His best WSOP result was 11th in the 2018 WSOP Europe €10,350 Main Event (€59,011) and 12th in the €100,000 King's Super High Roller (€184,073). He also cashed seven times at the 2023 WSOP Europe alone.

In 2015, he won the France Poker Series High Roller in Deauville for €141,000. At the 2016 PCA, he was fifth in the main event for over $200,000. In May 2017, he finished second in the PokerStars Championship Sochi main event for nearly $330,000. In August 2018, he placed second in the Triton Poker High Roller at partypoker Millions Russia in Sochi for $501,386. His largest live prize came in August 2019 at the partypoker Millions Europe in Rozvadov, where he finished second in the €100,000 Triton Super High Roller, earning €844,063 (approximately $945,000) after a deal with Orpen Kisacikoglu.

Troyanovskiy has also performed well in Triton Poker events, with three cashes totaling $1.56 million, including a 13th-place finish in a $25K event in Jeju in 2024. He has accumulated over $7.9 million in live tournament earnings, making him the second most successful Russian player after Igor Kurganov.

On PokerStars, Troyanovskiy plays under the nickname "vovtroy." According to online tracking databases, he has earned over $1.2 million in online tournaments, including multiple first-place finishes and final tables in major events. He previously played cash games online but now focuses on tournaments, citing the difficulty of competing against professionals and data-using opponents in cash games. He has also been active in high-stakes online sit-and-gos and heads-up matches.

Troyanovskiy is known as a tight-aggressive (TAG) player who emphasizes hand selection and positional advantage, excelling in post-flop decisions. He avoids marginal spots and makes decisive bets when necessary. Notably, he does not follow conventional bankroll management, often risking a quarter or even a third of his poker assets on a single event if he believes the game is favorable. He prefers live poker over online, as it allows him to apply all his experience and read opponents. At the table, he is described as friendly, smiling, and courteous.

Troyanovskiy is married with a daughter. He also runs a business with friends, working on long-term projects that allow him flexibility to travel for poker tournaments. He is known as a backer, supporting other players financially. He has been denied a visa to the United States multiple times due to an error in his initial application, which has prevented him from playing in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas since 2007. Despite this, he remains a regular on the European and Asian circuits.

In 2016, Troyanovskiy participated in the Global Poker League (GPL) as a member of the Moscow Wolverines, managed by Anatoly Filatov, helping the team reach the playoffs. He also represented Russia in the Global Masters team event in 2015. His consistent high-stakes successes and affable persona have made him a respected figure in the international poker community, often referred to as a "perfect Russian gambler" for his blend of skill, business acumen, and willingness to take calculated risks.
