Winfred Yu was born in Hong Kong and emigrated to Canada at the age of 14. He studied mathematics and statistics, which later provided a strong analytical foundation for his poker career. On his very first day at a Canadian poker club, he sat next to a young Daniel Negreanu, who was working as a dealer at the time—a serendipitous introduction to the game.
