Flop C-Bet Basics: When to C-Bet and How to Execute

What is a Continuation Bet (c-bet)?

A continuation bet (c-bet) is a bet made by the preflop raiser on the flop. Since the preflop raiser usually has a range advantage, the c-bet is an effective offensive weapon.

Why c-bet?

• Take down the pot immediately: When the flop is dry and the opponent's range is weak, a c-bet can force the opponent to fold directly.
• Value bet: When your hand hits a strong hand (like top pair or better), a c-bet builds the pot right away and extracts value from draws or medium-strength hands.
• Protect made hands: On wet flops, your top pair or two pair needs to bet quickly to deny free cards to draws.
• Bluff: Even if you completely miss the flop, using range and position advantages can force opponents to fold weaker hands.

When to c-bet?

1. Consider the flop structure

• Dry flop (e.g., K♠7♦2♣): Few high cards hit, so you can c-bet at a high frequency. The opponent is unlikely to have connected, giving your bet a high fold equity.
• Wet flop (e.g., 9♠8♠7♣): Many draws and made hands possible; c-betting requires more caution. Especially when the opponent has many straight or flush draws, your bluffs may not get enough folds.

2. Consider the opponent's range

• Preflop caller's range: If the opponent defends from the big blind, his range is very wide and includes many junk hands; on the flop he will have many weak hands, making c-bets profitable.
• Position: C-betting is more common in position (e.g., on the button) because you can control pot size and gain information on later streets. Out of position, c-betting requires more care, as you can get into trouble if raised.

Common mistakes

• C-betting too frequently: Many beginners c-bet almost 100% of the time, but experienced opponents can easily exploit this. Adjust frequency based on situations.
• Ignoring opponent tendencies: If the opponent folds often, you can c-bet more; if the opponent likes to float, reduce bluffs and increase value bets.
• Rigid bet sizing: Don't always bet exactly 1/2 pot. Varying your sizing makes it harder for opponents to counter.

Practical examples

Example 1: You defend from the big blind; the button raises to 3BB preflop and you call. Flop: K♠8♣2♥. You check, button c-bets 1/3 pot. You hold 9♠7♠, only a gutshot straight draw. Is the pot odds to call? Pot is about 6.5BB, you need to call 2BB, odds about 1:4. The gutshot has about 4.5:1 odds to hit by the turn, so close but slightly negative, also consider implied odds. More commonly, you should fold.

Example 2: You raise on the button, big blind calls. Flop: A♣J♠5♦. You hold A♦Q♣. You c-bet 2/3 pot. Big blind calls. This bet builds the pot and extracts value from weaker aces and high cards. If the big blind calls, you are generally ahead of his A-X range.
