Basic Logic of Hijack Steal

The [Hijack] (HJ) is located at UTG+2 and is the last position before the CO that can comfortably steal blinds. Since there are still four players to act after the Hijack (CO, BTN, SB, BB), a successful steal requires a high fold equity from opponents and that your hand has playability if faced with a [3-bet].

• [Position Advantage]: The Hijack has more information than UTG (earlier fold) but is more susceptible to re-steals than CO/BTN. The core of a steal is to exploit the tight-passive tendencies of the blinds and the defense ranges of CO/BTN.

Hijack Steal Hand Range

In a standard 6-max or 9-max table, the Hijack's steal range can be divided into two categories:

1. Value Steals (Strong Hands)

These hands retain enough equity even if called or 3-bet:

• All pocket pairs ([22]+)
• All suited aces and medium-to-high suited connectors (AXs, [KQs], [QJs], [JTs], [T9s], [98s])
• [A9o]+, [KTo]+, [QJo]+ (avoid very weak offsuit hands)

2. Pure [Steals] ([Bluff])

Apply pressure by exploiting opponent fold equity:

• [A2s]-[A5s] (with backdoor flush, less dominated)
• Small suited connectors ([54s]+, 67s+)
• Some offsuit connectors ([T9o], [98o]) — only when the blinds are very tight

Open Raise Size: Typically 2.5-3bb. Use 2.5bb against tight-passive blinds to steal more pots; use 3bb or more against aggressive blinds to increase fold equity.

Defense: Hijack Facing a 3-Bet

When a blind or later-position player 3-bets, the Hijack should decide whether to continue based on:

• 3-bettor's Position: BTN's [3-bet range] is wider; SB/BB's [3-bet range] is more polarized (strong hands or bluffs).
• [Stack Depth]: Effective stacks >40bb allow [4-bet] or call; <30bb prefer fold or jam.
• Your Hand:
  • Strong hands ([TT]+, AQ+) are for value [4-bet] or call.
  • Medium hands ([66]-[99], [AJs], [KQs]) can call to see a flop, but beware of domination.
  • Weak steal hands ([A2s], [54s]) usually fold unless you have a specific read.

Example: 100bb deep, HJ steals 3bb with A♠5♠, BTN 3-bets to 10bb. Fold or call? If BTN's 3-bet range includes bluffs (A2s, [K9s], etc.), [A5s] is suitable for a [4-bet bluff] (blocking AA/AK) or a call. But usually, fold to avoid domination.

Blind Defense Against Hijack Steal

As SB or BB, when HJ opens, your re-steal (3-bet) range should include:

• Value 3-bet: [TT]+, [ATs]+, [KJs]+, [QJs], [AQo]+ (polarized to big pairs and strong aces)
• Bluff 3-bet: A2s-A5s, [K9s], [Q9s], [J8s], [T8s], [98s] (using blocker effects)
• [Calling Range]: Small to medium pairs ([22]-[99]), suited connectors ([65s]+), some AXs (e.g., [A7s]-[A9s])

Adjustment Factors:

• If HJ's [steal frequency] is high (>30%), widen 3-bet range to punish.
• If HJ plays solidly post-flop after calling, favor value 3-bets.
• In the big blind, calling offers better pot odds, so you can add more small pairs to your calling range.

Practical Examples & Thoughts

Assume 9-max, blinds 1/2, effective stacks 200. HJ raises to 6, CO folds, BTN is tight-passive, SB is loose-aggressive.

• Steal Example: HJ has A♦4♦, standard steal. SB 3-bets to 18. HJ should fold because [A4s] is easily dominated and unlikely to hit a strong hand on the flop.
• Re-steal Example: SB has K♥9♥, perceives HJ's steal range as wide, 3-bets to 20. If HJ 4-bets, SB can fold; if HJ calls, SB can be aggressive when hitting top pair or a flush draw.

Core Principle: Hijack steal is a low-risk way to pick up dead money, but you must strictly control your range to avoid multi-way pots. When re-stealing, use position and reads to punish frequent stealers.
