Value 4-Bet

Overview

A value 4-bet is an aggressive preflop play in Texas Hold'em where a player, after facing a 3-bet, makes a fourth raise (i.e., a 4-bet) with a strong hand from their range. The goal is to extract value from worse hands that the opponent might hold, rather than using it as a bluff.

Situations for Use

Value 4-bets typically occur in the following scenarios:

• The player holds very strong hands such as AA, KK, QQ, or AKs (suited AK).
• The opponent's 3-betting range is wide and they tend to call or reraise with weaker hands.
• The player wants to build the pot to maximize profit against weaker holdings.

Difference from Bluff 4-Bet

A value 4-bet contrasts with a bluff 4-bet (4-Bet Bluff). A bluff 4-bet uses weak hands (like small pairs or suited connectors) to force a fold, while a value 4-bet aims for the opponent to call or 5-bet, leading to a profitable pot.

Strategic Considerations

• Position: A value 4-bet is more effective when in position (e.g., on the button), as it allows control of postflop action.
• Opponent Tendencies: Against aggressive opponents, a value 4-bet punishes their overly wide 3-betting range; against conservative opponents, calling may be preferable.
• Stack Depth: With deep stacks, a value 4-bet can build a large pot, but beware of opponents' potential 5-bet bluffs.

Example

Suppose you hold AA on the button, and the small blind makes a 3-bet. You choose to 4-bet to a certain size, hoping the small blind calls with KK or QQ, allowing you to extract value postflop.

Notes

• The sizing of a value 4-bet is typically large, around 2.5-3 times the pot, to force opponent mistakes.
• Overusing value 4-bets can make your range too transparent, allowing opponents to exploit you.
