Overview

40bb Steal is a blind-stealing strategy in Texas Hold'em for specific stack depths. When the effective stack depth is about 40 big blinds, a player (usually in later position) uses a raise to try to force the blinds to fold, thus directly winning the blinds and antes in the pot. At this depth, the defending range of the blind players will be adjusted, and the stealer needs to select suitable hands and raise sizing.

Key Strategy Points

  • Position Advantage: At 40bb depth, the Button and Hijack are ideal steal positions because they have positional advantage over the blinds.
  • Hand Selection: Typically use a wider range, including weak aces, suited connectors, small to medium pairs, etc., but avoid too marginal hands because the blinds' 3-bet may apply pressure.
  • Raise Sizing: Typical raise size is 2.2-2.5 big blinds, which provides good steal effectiveness with manageable risk. A larger raise increases losses when unsuccessful, while a smaller one reduces fold equity.
  • Responding to 3-bets: At 40bb depth, when facing a 3-bet, the stealer must be cautious about calling or 4-betting, as the stack depth may not support large swings. Many players will choose to fold to preserve chips.

Applicable Scenarios

40bb Steal is common during the mid-tournament stage or certain phases of cash games, when blinds are relatively high but players still have enough chips for post-flop play. If stack depth is below 30bb, the steal strategy should be more conservative; above 50bb, the frequency and raise sizing can be increased.

Notes

  • Avoid frequently stealing against tight-aggressive blind players, as they may counter with a wider 3-bet range.
  • Consider the impact of antes: the larger the antes, the more dead money in the pot, and the higher the expected value of stealing.
  • Maintain strategy balance: mix pure steal hands with value raise hands to prevent being read by opponents.
