Overview

A 40bb steal is a common preflop strategy in no-limit hold'em, where a player in late position (CO or BTN) raises with a wide range when the effective stack size is approximately 40 big blinds. The goal is to exploit the tight blinds by taking down the blinds and antes without contest, or to apply pressure with a hand that can play well post-flop if called.

Typical Raise Size

At 40bb stacks, standard steal raises range from 2 to 2.5 big blinds (plus any antes). Smaller raises (e.g., 2bb) are often used to risk less and allow more frequent steals, while larger raises (2.5bb–3bb) may be used against blind defenders who call too often or to balance with value hands.

Hand Selection

A 40bb steal range typically includes:

• Strong hands: High pairs (JJ+), strong aces (AQ+), and broadways (KQ) for value.
• Medium hands: Suited connectors (76s+), suited aces (A2s+), and some offsuit broadways (KTo, QJo) for balance.
• Weak hands: Trash suited hands or weak offsuit cards (e.g., 84s) at a low frequency to exploit tight blinds.

Adjustments Based on Opponents

• Tight blinds: Widen the steal range to include more weak holdings, as they fold frequently.
• Aggressive 3-bettors: Tighten the range and consider folding or 4-bet bluffing with strong hands; smaller steal sizes can limit losses against re-raises.
• Calling stations: Use a linear value-heavy range and avoid speculative hands that are difficult to play post-flop.

Post-Flop Considerations

With 40bb stacks, the effective stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) after a steal and call is low (around 10-13). This means top pair or better hands can often commit chips, but draws and marginal hands need careful play. Continuation betting is common on dry boards, while checking back on wet boards may be preferable with weak draws.
