Context: Poker term: 4Bet The fourth round of betting pre-flop, usually a re-raise to a 3Bet.

4Bet

Concept

A 4Bet is the fourth round of betting in the pre-flop phase. It typically occurs after one player raises (2Bet), another player re-raises (3Bet), and then the initial raiser or a third player raises again. The 4Bet is an aggressive pre-flop action used to counter a 3Bet, with the goal of retaking the initiative or isolating an opponent.

Purpose

  • Value: When holding strong hands (e.g., [AA], [KK], [AKs]), use a 4Bet to build the pot pre-flop, especially in deep stack situations.
  • Bluff: Balance your range by 4-betting with some medium-strength hands or a small portion of weak hands, forcing opponents to fold.
  • Information: Test opponents' reactions to the 3Bet and narrow their ranges.

Strategy Points

  • Position: In a favorable position (e.g., the button), you can widen your 4Bet range; in an unfavorable position, keep it tighter.
  • Stack Depth: With deep effective stacks (>100BB), 4Bet more frequently; with short stacks (<40BB), 4Bet mainly for value.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Against frequent 3-bettors, increase your 4Bet frequency; against tight-passive players, reduce it.
  • Sizing: A typical 4Bet is 2.2–2.8x the initial raise, or 2–2.5x the 3Bet. Sizing may adjust in online short-deck or tournament play.

Common Range Example (100BB Cash)

  • TAG: Only 4Bet with [QQ]+, AK against a 3Bet.
  • LAG: Add [AJs]+, KQ, small pairs, etc., as 4Bet bluffs.

Notes

  • Over-4Betting can be exploited by opponents who call and use post-flop skills against you.
  • In tournaments, consider ICM factors to avoid high variance.
  • After a 4Bet, opponents may 5Bet shove, so plan your response in advance.
