In hand rankings, 83o ranks near the bottom. It has no suited potential, no straight draw unless the board is extremely favorable (e.g., 5-6-7), and two low cards with a large gap. Against a random hand, 83o has about 30–35% equity, but in real play it is almost always dominated and rarely profitable to play voluntarily.
Strategy
- Pre-flop: Almost always fold from early and middle position. In late position (button or cutoff), it can be a steal attempt against tight blinds, but this is a marginal play. In the big blind, check to see a flop if no raise, but fold to any significant aggression.
- Post-flop: 83o rarely flops strong draws or made hands. If it hits two pair or trips, it may be playable, but otherwise should be folded to any bet.
