Context: Poker term: A5 suited (A5s) Refers to a starting hand holding A and 5 of the same suit, commonly used for preflop raising or defending. It has potential for flush draws and gutshot straight draws.
A5 Suited (A5s)
Overview
A5s (Ace-5 suited) is a specific starting hand in Texas Hold'em: an Ace and a 5 of the same suit (e.g., Ace of spades and 5 of spades). Among starting hand combos, A5s is a medium-strong hand, suitable for raising in good position and for defending or 3-betting from the blinds.
Preflop Strategy
- Raising Range: In a standard [6-max] game, A5s is often included in the preflop raising range, especially from the [button] (BTN) or [cutoff] (CO). It has good playability because it can flop top pair, a flush, or a straight draw.
- Blind Defense: When the [button raises], the big blind will often call or 3-bet with A5s. Due to its [blocker effect] (blocking some combos of AA and AK) and tendency to be overlooked by opponents, it is a good hand for 3-bet bluffs.
- [Deep stacked] vs. [Short stacked]: When [deep stacked], the flush and straight potential of A5s is more valuable. When [short stacked], it is usually better to either shove or fold, because hitting top pair with a weak kicker is problematic.
Postflop Play
- Hitting Top Pair: When the flop contains an Ace and no flush draw, top pair with a weak kicker requires caution. Calling a [continuation bet] is fine, but consider folding to a large raise, especially if the opponent's range includes stronger Aces.
- [Flush draw]: If the flop has two cards of your suit, A5s has a [nut flush draw] (only losing to Ace with a higher suited card). You can aggressively [semi-bluff raise].
- [Gutshot draw]: When the flop is 6-7-8 with two of your suit, A5s becomes an [open-ended straight draw] (4 or 9 makes the straight). Combined with a [flush draw], the equity is very high.
- [Air]: If you miss the flop, decide whether to continue based on the opponent's range and bet size. In a [multiway pot], it is advisable to fold. In a heads-up pot, consider floating or bluffing.
Notes
- Avoid overvaluing A5s's [showdown value], especially in [multiway pots], where Ace-high is often not strong enough.
- Against a [nit], stealing blinds and 3-betting with A5s works better, but be cautious against a [calling station].
