Wheel

轮子

**Context: Term: 轮子 (Wheel)** In Texas Hold'em, a wheel refers to the smallest straight, i.e., A-2-3-4-5, where Ace plays low. In practice, wheels often appear in low-stakes games or Pot-Limit Omaha, as they are well-disguised and can effectively counter opponents' high card combinations, but have limited value and are easily beaten by larger straights or flushes. Typical scenario: the flop is A-3-5, you hold 2-4, hitting the wheel, your opponent holds A-K, you bet to induce a call and eventually win the pot.

Overview

"Wheel" is a nickname for a specific straight in Texas Hold'em, referring to the straight composed of A, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Since the Ace is used as a low card (i.e., Ace counts as 1), it is the smallest straight. When comparing hands, a Wheel loses to any other straight, such as 2-3-4-5-6.

Hand Composition

The Wheel consists of the cards A-2-3-4-5, and it does not require them to be suited. If all five cards are of the same suit, it forms a "Steel Wheel," which is the smallest straight flush combination.

Strategic Significance

  • Probability of Making the Hand: The Wheel is a relatively easy straight to make, especially when you hold an Ace and two of the cards 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the flop, giving you many drawing opportunities.
  • Deceptiveness: Since an Ace is usually seen as a high card, when the board shows A-2-3-4-5, opponents may underestimate your hand strength, allowing you to extract value on the river.
  • Risk: The Wheel is the smallest straight. If an opponent holds a higher straight (e.g., 6-7-8-9-10), you will lose the pot. Therefore, in multi-way pots or when the board is conducive to straights, proceed with caution.

Example

Suppose your hole cards are A♠2♥ and the community cards are 3♦4♣5♠; you have a Wheel. If the board is A♦2♣3♥4♠5♦, then all players share the Wheel, and the pot is usually split.
