Concept

BB River Jam Wet is a specific poker play where a player in the Big Blind (BB) executes an all-in (Jam) on the river (River) against a wet board. This strategy typically occurs after defending in the big blind preflop, without raising postflop, and then shoving all chips directly on the river.

Strategic Principles

  • Range Advantage: The big blind sees the flop at a low cost and can hold a wider range, including many drawing hands. Wet boards (such as those where straight or flush draws complete) make the big blind's range more balanced between value hands and bluffs, allowing the all-in to apply maximum pressure.
  • Polarized Range: An all-in is a polarized bet, representing either a strong hand (e.g., a straight, flush, or full house) or a pure bluff. On wet boards, the big blind can use this extreme range to force opponents to fold medium-strength hands.
  • Blocking Effects: The big blind may hold key blockers to opponents' made hands (e.g., holding a specific suit that makes a flush impossible), increasing the success rate of a bluff shove.

Applicable Scenarios

  • The river completes an obvious draw, and the big blind judges that the opponent's range contains many medium-strength hands that are not strong enough to call an all-in.
  • The big blind's range has a high enough proportion of value hands that the bluff shove is balanced and not easily exploitable.
  • The opponent is a tight-aggressive player who tends to over-fold to all-ins.

Notes

  • Frequency Control: Overusing this strategy can lead to opponents adjusting their play against it.
  • Opponent Type: Avoid frequent use against calling stations, as they may call with weaker hands.
  • Stack Depth: In deep stack situations, all-ins carry greater risk and require consideration of pot odds and implied odds.
