In practice, a bottom pair is usually the weakest made hand, as it is easily overtaken by higher pairs or draws. It is mainly used to attempt a cheap steal of the pot or as a bluff cover. Typical scenario: The flop is K-9-3, and you hold A-3, pairing the lowest board card, the 3. If an opponent bets, you should proceed cautiously by calling or folding, as the opponent may hold a K or 9 for top pair or middle pair, leaving your bottom pair with low equity.
Overview
Bottom Pair is a hand type in Texas Hold'em where one of the player's hole cards pairs with the lowest card on the community cards. For example, if the community cards are K♠ 9♥ 3♦ and the player holds A♣ 3♠, they have bottom pair (pair of threes). Bottom pair is generally weak because opponents may hold larger pairs or draws.
Hand Strength Evaluation
Bottom pair is usually a marginal hand on the flop; its value depends on board texture and opponent range. On a dry board (e.g., K♠ 7♦ 2♣), bottom pair may have some showdown value, but it is easily dominated by top pair or overpairs. On a wet board (e.g., J♠ T♠ 9♣), bottom pair is highly vulnerable to being outdrawn by draws and may face stronger made hands. In general, bottom pair has lower value in multi-way pots because the chance that an opponent holds a larger pair increases.
Strategy Advice
- Position advantage: When in position, consider checking or making a small bet to test; if the opponent shows weakness, you can aim for showdown.
- Flop: Usually it is advisable to check-call and avoid building a large pot. If the board has straight or flush draw possibilities, consider folding.
- Turn and River: If a high card or a completed draw appears on the board, bottom pair should generally be folded. If the board remains dry and the opponent shows weakness, a thin value bet may be considered.
- Facing a raise: Against a raise on the flop, bottom pair should usually be folded unless there is an additional draw (e.g., bottom pair plus a flush draw).
Example
Player's hand: 8♠ 7♠, community cards: A♦ 9♣ 7♥. The player has bottom pair (pair of sevens). After betting on the flop, the opponent raises. The player should fold because the opponent may have top pair or an overpair.
