Bounty

Context: Term: Bounty Bounty refers to the cash or reward obtained after eliminating an opponent in a Texas Hold'em tournament, typically from that opponent's buy-in or an additional allocation from the tournament prize pool. In practice, the bounty mechanism encourages players to be aggressive, increasing the incentive to eliminate opponents rather than solely pursuing higher rankings. For example, in a "bounty tournament," you immediately receive a $50 cash reward for each elimination, which makes you more inclined to go all-in against short-stacked players, even with a marginal hand, because the bounty gain may outweigh the potential loss in rank.

Overview
Bounty ([Bounty]) is a reward mechanism in poker tournaments, commonly found in "[Bounty Tournament]" ([Bounty] Tournament) or "Knockout Tournament". In this format, part of each player's buy-in is allocated to establish bounties, typically half of the buy-in. When a player eliminates another player, the eliminator receives the eliminated player's bounty.
Types of Bounties
- Standard Bounty: Each player's bounty is fixed, usually half of the buy-in. For example, if the buy-in is $100, $50 goes to the prize pool and $50 serves as the bounty. Eliminating an opponent earns you $50.
- Progressive Bounty: Also known as "Increasing Bounty" or "[PKO]" ([Progressive Knockout]). In this format, a player's bounty increases as they eliminate opponents. The initial bounty is half the buy-in. When a player eliminates an opponent, they receive half of the opponent's bounty, while the other half is added to the eliminator's own bounty. Therefore, as eliminations increase, the player's bounty grows and becomes a target for others.
Strategic Impact
The presence of bounties alters tournament strategy. In standard bounty tournaments, players may be more inclined to take risks to eliminate opponents, especially when the opponent's bounty is high. In progressive bounty tournaments, strategy is more complex: players need to balance accumulating bounties with surviving to reach the money ([ITM]). Typically, in early stages, pursuing bounties may be more advantageous because the bounty value is relatively large; near the money bubble, survival takes precedence.
Common Events
Many online and live poker platforms host bounty tournaments, such as the "Bounty Builder" series. The WSOP (World Series of Poker) also features bounty events, like the "$1,500 Bounty No-[Limit Hold'em]".
