Overview

A Bounty Final Table refers to the final table of a bounty or knockout poker tournament. In such events, each player has a bounty on their head — a cash prize awarded to the player who eliminates them. At the final table, bounties often become a significant factor, altering decision-making compared to a standard (non-bounty) final table.

How Bounties Work

In a typical bounty tournament, each player starts with a bounty equal to a portion of their buy-in (e.g., half the buy-in goes to the prize pool, half to bounties). When Player A eliminates Player B, Player A receives B's bounty. In Progressive Knockout (PKO) tournaments, half of the bounty is awarded immediately, and the other half is added to the eliminator's own bounty, increasing it. In Standard Knockout (SKO) tournaments, the entire bounty is awarded upon elimination and bounties are fixed.

At the final table, bounties can be substantial, especially in PKO events where they have grown throughout the tournament. Players must weigh the value of chips from the regular prize pool against the immediate cash from bounties.

At the final table, the bubble factor — the ratio of how much a chip is worth when lost vs. gained — is influenced by bounties. Chips gained from eliminating a player have added value (the bounty), making aggressive plays more attractive against opponents with large bounties.

Players with large bounties become targets. If a short-stacked player has an enormous bounty, even a chip leader may risk elimination to collect it. Conversely, a player with a small bounty might be avoided if the risk is high. This creates non-linear payoffs where the "correct" play depends on who you can eliminate.

Adjustments to Ranges

  • Stealing blinds: Opening ranges can widen because winning a pot without showdown avoids risking a bounty payment.
  • Calling shoves: Defending ranges tighten against players with large bounties (you don't want to give them your bounty), but widen when you have a chance to eliminate a big bounty.
  • All-in confrontations: Expected value (EV) calculations must include the bounty cash. For example, calling an all-in might be +EV even if chip EV is slightly negative if the opponent's bounty is large.

Differences from Classic Final Tables

In a classic (non-bounty) final table, players focus solely on laddering up the prize pool. Bounties introduce a second currency, leading to more action. Players may eliminate opponents earlier than ICM would suggest in a normal tournament, especially when a big bounty is at stake.

Example Scenario

Consider a PKO final table with six players. Player A has the largest chip stack and also the largest bounty ($5,000). Player B is short-stacked but has a small bounty ($500). Player C, with a medium stack and a $2,000 bounty, shoves all-in from the button. The correct calling range for Player A includes many hands, since eliminating Player C yields both chips and a $2,000 bounty. However, Player A must also consider that losing chips or being eliminated would give away a huge bounty.
