Overview

Bounty Heads-Up is a special format of poker tournaments, typically appearing in the final stages of a Bounty Tournament. When the tournament reaches the heads-up phase, both players carry a certain amount of bounty chips (usually accumulated from previously eliminated opponents). Eliminating the opponent not only awards standard chip prizes but also directly collects the opponent's bounty.

Gameplay Features

  • Bounty Accumulation: Each player's bounty equals the total bounty amount they have accumulated by eliminating opponents during the tournament. At the start of heads-up, the bounties may differ between the two players.
  • Strategic Impact: The presence of bounties alters the traditional heads-up decision-making logic. Players must weigh the expected value of the regular pot against the additional bounty value, especially when short-stacked, where they may be more inclined to take risks to chase the bounty.
  • Dynamic Adjustment: Some events use a Progressive Bounty format, where the bounty won is immediately added to the winner's own bounty. This often results in extremely high bounty amounts during the heads-up phase, making it highly enticing.

Common Scenarios

  • Online Tournaments: Many online platforms (e.g., PokerStars, GGPoker) feature "Bounty Builder" series events that transition into Bounty Heads-Up after the final table.
  • Live Events: Some major live tournaments (e.g., WSOP, EPT) also incorporate bounty rounds, with bounties displayed openly on the table during the heads-up phase.

Strategic Considerations

  • ICM Impact: Since bounties are instant non-chip rewards, traditional ICM models need adjustment, typically converting bounties into equivalent chip value.
  • Range Adjustments: The player in the lead (with a higher bounty) may prioritize protecting their bounty and avoid being outdrawn, while the trailing player might adopt a more aggressive style to double up and claim the bounty.
  • Psychological Game: Differences in how each player perceives the value of the bounty can be exploited, for example, by showing weakness to induce opponent mistakes.
