BTN 3-Bet Pot Flop Strategy

BTN 3-Bet Pot Flop Strategy

It typically involves continuation betting, checking ranges, and adjustments based on different flop textures.

Overview

The flop strategy for the Button (BTN) in a 3-bet pot revolves around leveraging positional advantage and range advantage. Since the button acts last post-flop and the 3-bet range typically consists of strong hands and some bluffs, the flop strategy is relatively aggressive but should be flexibly adjusted based on board texture, opponent tendencies, and stack depth.

Continuation Bet (C-bet) Strategy

  • High Frequency C-betting: On most dry or low-connectivity flops (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow), the button should C-bet at a high frequency to apply pressure using range advantage.
  • Bet Sizing: Typically use a small bet (around 33% of the pot) or a medium bet (around 50% of the pot). Small bets are for polarizing ranges, while medium bets are for value.
  • Board Texture: On wet boards (e.g., J-T-9 two-tone), reduce C-bet frequency and mix in checks to protect the range and control the pot.

Check Range

  • Protective Check: When the flop is unfavorable for your range or hits the opponent's range (e.g., small paired boards), check some strong hands (e.g., top pair or better) to avoid being forced into tough spots if raised.
  • Inducing Check: Combine with bluff hands (e.g., backdoor flush or straight draws) to check, planning to bluff on the turn or improve equity.

Responding to Raises

  • When the opponent raises on the flop, decide whether to call, re-raise, or fold based on the board texture, opponent tendencies, and hand strength. Generally, strong hands (top pair or better) choose to raise or call, while medium hands (middle pair or draws) should be handled cautiously.

Practical Example

  • Example: Flop K♠9♥3♣, BTN holds A♣K♣ (top pair top kicker). C-bet about 50% of the pot for value. If holding 7♣8♣ (backdoor straight flush draw), check or make a small bluff bet.

Notes

  • Adjust strategy based on opponent type: against aggressive players, reduce C-bet frequency; against passive opponents, increase value bets.
  • Stack depth influences strategy: with deep stacks, focus more on pot control; with short stacks, lean toward shoving or calling.
