BTN 3-Bet Pot Preflop Strategy

BTN 3-Bet Pot Preflop Strategy

Term: BTN 3-Bet Pot Preflop Strategy Refers to the strategic framework in No-Limit Hold'em for a player on the button who has made a 3-bet preflop against an opponent's raise, in the specific pot scenario that results. It includes range selection, handling 4-bets, and post-flop play when called.

Overview

BTN (Button) holds positional advantage postflop, so BTN's 3-bet strategy is typically more aggressive than that of other positions. A 3-bet pot means the preflop pot is larger and the opponent's range is usually stronger, requiring careful strategic adjustments.

Range Selection

BTN's 3-bet range is usually divided into value 3-bets and bluff 3-bets. Value 3-bets include strong hands like TT+, AQ+, etc. Bluff 3-bets include suited connectors (e.g., T9s), small pairs (e.g., 55), or hands with blockers like A2s-A5s. The specific range should be adjusted based on the opponent’s raising range (RFI) and fold-to-3-bet frequency. Generally, BTN’s 3-bet frequency ranges from 8% to 12%, but it can increase to over 15% if the opponent folds frequently.

Against Different Opponents

  • Versus Tight-Aggressive opponents: Increase bluff 3-bets to exploit their high fold rate.
  • Versus Loose-Aggressive opponents: Tighten 3-bet range and use more value 3-bets with strong hands.
  • Versus Passive opponents: Reduce bluffs, as they tend to make more postflop mistakes after calling.

Responding to 4-bet

After BTN’s 3-bet is 4-bet, decide whether to call or fold based on the opponent's 4-bet range. Generally, QQ+ and AK can call or 5-bet shove; JJ and AQ depend on the situation. Bluff 3-bet hands are usually folded, but some suited connectors can call if the pot odds are favorable.

Postflop Play

Postflop, BTN as the player in position should leverage positional advantage for continuation bets (c-bet). C-bet frequently on dry boards, and mix in checks on wet boards. Due to the larger pot, bet sizing is typically 50% to 75% of the pot. If the opponent check-raises, decide whether to fold based on board texture and opponent tendencies.

Adjustment Factors

  • Effective Stack Depth: With deep stacks, expand the 3-bet range to exploit position postflop; with short stacks, 3-bet often with the intention to shove.
  • Opponent’s Cold-Calling Range: If opponents frequently cold-call after BTN’s 3-bet, adjust the range to avoid weakening your advantage in multiway pots.
  • Game Dynamics: In tournaments, consider ICM pressure; in cash games, focus more on EV.
