BTN 30bb Steal
In No-Limit Texas Hold'em, a player on the button with an effective stack of about 30 big blinds attempts a blind steal raising to try to win the blinds.
Overview
BTN 30bb Steal is a blind-stealing strategy typically employed in No-Limit Hold'em cash games or tournaments when the Button (BTN) player has an effective stack of around 30 big blinds (30bb). This stack depth is in the middle stage, where players have enough chips to apply pressure but also face relatively high postflop risk.
Strategic Considerations
- Stealing Range: At 30bb depth, the Button's stealing range is typically wide, around 40%-60% of starting hands, including medium pairs, suited connectors, high cards, and some junk hands. The exact range should be adjusted based on opponent tendencies and the blinds' defensive behavior.
- Raise Sizing: A common raise size is 2.2-2.5bb to balance fold equity and postflop playability. Larger raises reduce steal success rates, while smaller ones give the blinds favorable pot odds to call.
- Opponent Reactions: Blind players may 3bet, call, or fold. Facing a 3bet, the Button must decide based on hand strength and range whether to 4bet shove or fold. At 30bb, a 4bet shove is a common strategy, as the effective stack allows enough pressure.
Postflop Play
If a blind calls, the postflop pot is about 5-6bb, with remaining chips around 27-28bb. As the preflop aggressor, the Button typically uses a continuation bet (c-bet) strategy, betting about 1/3 to 1/2 pot on roughly 70% of flops. If the opponent fights back, decisions depend on board texture and hand strength.
Example
In a 9-handed cash game with blinds 0.5/1 and an effective stack of 30bb, the Button holds K♥9♠. Action folds to the Button, who raises to 2.5bb. Both blinds fold, resulting in a successful steal.
Notes
- Avoid stealing too frequently, as blinds may adjust and counter.
- Be mindful of ICM Pressure in tournaments; at 30bb on the final table, play may be more cautious.
- Avoid excessive stealing against aggressive short-stacked players.
