BTN Donk Bet

BTN Donk Bet

Term: 庄位反主动下注(BTN Donk Bet) Refers to the action of a player on the button who, not being the preflop aggressor, leads out with a bet on the flop.

Basic Concept

A BTN Donk Bet is a specific type of leading bet in Texas Hold'em, referring to a player on the button (BTN) leading out on the flop. Typically, a Donk Bet is defined as: the preflop non-raiser being the first to bet on the flop, breaking the preflop raiser's continuation betting initiative. However, since the button is often last to act preflop, if the button limps into the pot, his postflop position shifts (e.g., after the blinds check, the button becomes the first to act). When he then bets before the preflop raiser, it constitutes a BTN Donk Bet.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Preflop Limp: The button player does not raise preflop but instead limps, potentially adopting this strategy when facing the blinds postflop.
  • Hitting a Strong Hand on the Flop: For example, flopping two pair or a set, using a bet to build the pot while preventing the preflop raiser from checking and slow-playing.
  • Flopping a Draw: Holding a flush or straight draw, using a Donk Bet to generate fold equity or get a free card on the turn.
  • Exploitative Strategy: Against a preflop raiser who checks too frequently, a Donk Bet can seize the initiative.

Points to Note

BTN Donk Bets are uncommon because the button typically enjoys positional advantage; voluntarily giving this up requires a specific reason. In high-stakes games, overusing this move can be exploited by opponents, while in lower stakes, it can sometimes confuse opponents effectively. It is recommended to use it only when the pot structure, opponent tendencies, and your own range are favorable.

Common Misconceptions

Some players mistakenly believe that any flop lead bet from the button is a Donk Bet. However, if the button was the preflop raiser, his bet is a continuation bet (C-Bet), not a Donk Bet.
