BTN Flop Squeeze Pot

BTN Flop Squeeze Pot

Term: BTN Flop Squeeze Pot Refers to a player on the button making a large bet or raise on the flop in a multi-way pot usually with preflop raises or multiple callers, using positional advantage to force middle players to fold, thereby isolating opponents or winning the pot directly.

Overview

BTN Flop Squeeze Pot is an advanced poker tactic that extends the pre-flop "squeeze" concept to the flop. Traditional squeezing usually occurs pre-flop, when a player raises and there are multiple callers, and the last player to act makes a large re-raise to force the callers to fold. BTN Flop Squeeze Pot specifically refers to the button player executing a similar move on the flop.

Applicable Scenarios

This tactic is common in the following situations:

  • The pot is already large pre-flop with multiple players (e.g., someone raised pre-flop and several called).
  • The flop texture is dry or misses most players' ranges, such as a rainbow A-7-2 flop.
  • The button player holds a hand with showdown value or a draw, but prefers to win the pot immediately.

Execution Points

  1. Position Advantage: The button is the most advantageous position post-flop, allowing observation of all opponents' decisions before acting.
  2. Bet Sizing: Typically a larger bet, such as 70%-100% of the pot, to apply enough pressure so intermediate players are reluctant to call.
  3. Range Assessment: Need to evaluate opponents' pre-flop ranges and whether the flop likely hit them with strong hands. If the flop is wet (e.g., connected or suited board), the risk is higher.

Risks and Rewards

  • Rewards: Success can significantly increase pot equity or even take down the pot directly, avoiding complex decisions in multi-way pots.
  • Risks: If an opponent holds a strong hand (e.g., top pair or better), the loss can be substantial. Overusing this tactic also makes it exploitable by experienced players.

Typical Example

Suppose pre-flop, UTG raises, CO calls, and the button with 9♦8♦ also calls. The flop comes J♠7♣2♥. The button bets 80% of the pot. This bet aims to force UTG and CO to fold unpaired hands or overcards that missed, allowing the button to win the pot with air or a marginal hand.
