BTN Preflop Single Raised Pot

BTN Preflop Single Raised Pot

Typically, the Button player has positional advantage.

Scenario Description

In Texas Hold'em, BTN Preflop Single Raised Pot refers to a common preflop situation: a player (usually from middle or late position, or before the button) makes a standard raise (typically 2-3 big blinds), and then the player on the button calls (or occasionally 3-bets), creating a single-raised pot. At this point, the button player is last to act on the flop, turn, and river (In Position, IP), giving a significant positional advantage.

Strategy Key Points

  • [Calling Range]: The button player typically calls with a wide range, including suited connectors, pairs, Axs, and some suited gappers, to leverage positional advantage post-flop and apply pressure. The range should avoid weak hands that are easily dominated.
  • 3-bet and Fold: When facing an early or middle position raise, the button player should consider 3-betting strong hands (like QQ+, AK) for value; medium-strength hands like ATo, KQo can be mixed between calling and folding depending on opponent tendencies. Fold weaker hands (e.g., trashy suited connectors) to avoid investing too much in unfavorable spots.
  • Post-flop Strategy: With position, the button player can more freely semi-bluff, value bet, or check for pot control post-flop. Common strategies include a high frequency of continuation betting (C-bet) on the flop, but adjusting on the turn and river based on pot size and opponent range.

Typical Example

Suppose a $2/$5 cash game with effective stacks of 100 BB. UTG folds, MP raises to $15, CO folds, and BTN calls with 87s. This enters a BTN Preflop Single Raised Pot, with a pot of about $32 (including the big blind). The flop comes J♦9♣3♥. BTN has an open-ended straight draw and can consider betting or raising to generate fold equity.

Importance

Understanding this scenario is crucial for constructing a balanced preflop range, especially against aggressive opponents. Properly handling BTN single-raised pots allows effective use of positional advantage while avoiding over-involvement that leads to pot control issues.
